From Sap to Syrup

Something special happens each Spring here at CCDS.  Just as the ground starts to thaw, the maple trees begin to provide us with sap!  Our little friends help to collect the sap from the trees in buckets, and take it to Seth where we boil it down to make maple syrup.
It takes about 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrup.  This year, after a slow start, we ended up with 45 gallons of collected sap, enough to make lots of delicious, homemade maple syrup.

We did a few things to help us learn about maple trees and the syrup they provide for us.

Making a "mini-evaporator" for syrup making in the
Nature Room.

 Syrup tasting...real or imitation?
And, of course, we had a pancake party to celebrate!

Thumbs up!
