Earth Day!

Here, in the CCDS Nature room, every day really is Earth Day.  I feel so lucky to work in a place that teaches respect for the Earth and all of the creatures that live on it.  I asked the kids a simple question:  What is Earth Day?  Here are a few of their answers...

"It's a day when we celebrate the Earth and pick up trash so people don't hurt their toes."

"It's the Earth's birthday - it's 154 years old."

"We celebrate the Earth and clean up everything that other people drop."

"Water keeps the birds happy.  We should keep the water clean."

"We should plant things in the garden on Earth Day.  The fox can live their because he is so beautiful."

"Snakes protect the Earth by saving their babies."

"When you plant flowers, it helps the Earth grow."

"It's when we pick up the trash so animals don't get stuck in it."

We also created an art project to celebrate.  Come visit the Nature Room to see all of our Earth Day projects.  If you can't make it in, here are a few of my favorites for you to view.

Happy Earth Day to all!!!

Wiggly worms

One of my favorite activities to do in the Spring is to
look for worms.
Just as the snow melted from the garden beds, we used shovels and hoes to search the gardens for worms. Here's what we found...

We also did a little worm painting.  However, no worms were harmed in the making of this art project.  Gummy worms work just as well as wiggly, slimy, living worms.

Spring? Is that you?

It might not look like Spring outside, but we sure have been trying hard to make it Spring inside the Nature room this week.  Seed planting has begun!

Tomatoes, peppers, kale, spinach and lettuce seeds were started and we already have sprouts!  I had some great help from some little hands.

We planted the seeds in the dirt and gave them a drink of water.  We put them in the sunlight and waited for the seeds to sprout.

We also planned out our dream gardens using old seed catalogs.

Here are some great quotes from the week that will warm your heart. :)
"I'm dreaming about blueberries!"
"I'm planting a whole bunch of celery that I like."
"Tomatoes are very, very good for us."
"My seeds like the sunshine, just like I do!"

Meet a tree!

After a long, harsh winter, our trees needed a little extra attention.  We went on a tree hike to meet a few trees and found some great ones!  We measured the circumference with measuring tape, looked for buds on branches and explored the roots, trunk, branches and bark.  Check out the pictures below!
